The folks from the Pender Islands Community Farmland Acquisition Project held a visioning exercise this afternoon at the Community Hall. Participants were asked to consider a new vision and mission for the fledgling organization. It was great to hear the ideas and vision that these folks hold for farming and food production on the Penders!
I did wish, however, that taking on responsibility for ensuring the food security of future generations of Penderites wasn’t deemed “negative” by some of the participants. Our culture really does seem to have lost — amidst today’s abundance and plenty — the notion of ensuring our children a better life (which was always a focus for past generations). For that, we are making our children’s future a thing of the past (climate change feedbacks are happening faster than anyone predicted) and those calling for safeguarding life on this precious planet (and this precious island) are considered shrill and “negative.” Are we incapable of dreaming big dreams for both ourselves and our children?
